Maggie Simpson has to be the oldest child ever in a daycare. The nomination of "The Longest Daycare" under Animated Shorts made me wonder just how long The Simpsons have been on. They started back in 1987 as a short on the Tracey Ullman Show and got their own show at the end of 1989. Their 24th season began airing last fall and this means that Maggie has been in daycare for over 24 years. Still getting to my point . . .
All those nominations for animated shorts and feature films are really nominations for illustrators. Every one of those animators, even if all they've ever worked with is a digital palette, is an illustrator. When I was younger, a long long time ago, my goal was to be an animator. I wanted to work for Disney, but I didn't want to move to the states. I had a chance to submit a portfolio to Disney many years later but I still had the same reservations then that I had earlier. Sometimes we make decisions in life that drastically alter the direction of our future, and sometimes they're the wrong ones. For the most part I feel I've made all the right decisions for me, but sometimes I wonder if I should have tried harder to work for Disney and eventually win that Oscar.
Congratulations to the illustrators of Pixar's "Brave" and Disney's "Paperman" on their Oscars. And congratulations to all the other illustrators that were nominated for their work. The award may not say "Best Illustrator" but we know who we are.
